Angel Eyes Episode 19 - 20

Frankly, after last episode's big reveals, confessions, arrests, forgiveness of Dr. Evil and regaining of sight, I just don't see what the Show has left to fill two more hours.

Well, now I see how the Show is going to fill those hours as the first fifteen minutes of Episode 19 is nothing but an extended flashback to when Jung Hwa went out to make the early morning deliveries. Only this time nerdy Ji Woon is able to slam on his brakes in time and not hit Dong Joo's mother. Soo Wan still gets her surgery (with whose eyes?) and young Dong Joo doesn't leave the country. Our happy couple attend the same (Semin!!) university together. Grown up Dong Joo becomes the firefighter he always wanted to be and Soo Wan follows her father's footsteps into medicine. Dong Joo and Ji Woon's bromance is as strong as ever. Dong Joo and Soo Wan have a very small wedding at the Prime Minister and I's church.

Screw this.

Episode 20 has Soo Wan running to the docks, crying out Dong Joo's name. It's too late as he's already on the ferry and they're pulling out. Back in town, Dong Joo goes to his favorite smoky bar (the one that never seems to have any customers nor a bartender on duty) and shares a drink with his bro, Ji Woon.

The next day Ji Woon goes to the prison to visit with his mother. They seem to have made peace with each other. Ji Woon is leaving for Africa to volunteer his medical services. Dong Joo is back to working over the ER. He informs the Three Prisoners that he'll be taking the weekends off for awhile. He'll be spending them at the rural retreat where Soo Wan appears to be working. He's slowly working on winning her back.

And I mean slowly.

Then Dong Joo gets hit by a car. FML. Is Ji Woon driving? The entire cast holds a vigil at the bedside of the unconscious doctor. Dong Joo wakes up. Soo Wan goes back to working for the rescue squad. Dong Joo goes back to working at the hospital. They plan to get married.

What happened to you, Show? What the hell happened to you?!

Angel Eyes Episode 18

Convinced she makes everyone around her miserable, Soo Wan declares she's going to be an island in a sea of humanity. She's going to close off her heart and never again allow anyone to get close to her. It's for their own good.

Unable to talk her out of her self-pity, Dong Joo heads to the smoky bar, Sting playing in the background, and downs a stiff drink with his partner, Ji Woon. Two men made miserable by loving Soo Wan. (Say, maybe she has a point about bringing woe to everyone she knows. Think about it: Mom killed. Second mom killed. First fiancée brokenhearted. Second fiancée brokenhearted. Dad dead. Soo Wan is the Typhoid Mary of love.)

Shifty Eyed Cop alerts Dr. Oh No! that it appears Kim Woo Chul has the goods on them. Shifty Eyed wants to take the detective out while Dr. Oh No! is surprisingly reluctant to commit another crime.

Cha Min Soo calls Ji Woon in order to secretly record his voice and compare it to the 119 call she found. Her suspicions are confirmed that somehow Ji Woon was involved in Jung Hwa's accident.

Shifty Eyed Cop calls Woo Chul to arrange a meeting. Woo Chul arrives at a crosswalks where a big (surprisingly not white) Truck O'Doom barrels towards him. He does nothing to try and get out of the way. Thank goodness Min Soo is stupid enough to drive her car into the path of the dump truck. The driver attempts to escape but Min Soo takes him down with an awesome kick to the head.

The awesomeness continues as Min Soo and Woo Chul return to the police station and have Shifty Eyed Cop arrested for attempted murder and tampering with evidence. Shifty Eyed was able to warn Dr. Oh No! before his arrest. She darts straight to her son's apartment and starts packing his bags. Ji Woon is understandably confused at her actions. (He's also looking mighty fine in that black T-shirt.)

Dr. Oh No! wants her offspring to flee to Australia, land of many men who look mighty fine in black T-shirts. Ji Woon pretends to go along with her plan and acts like he's driving off to the airport. Where he really ends up is the police station where he confesses to Min Soo while Dong Joo is allowed to watch from the other side of the glass. Ji Woon admits to being the one who hit Jung Hwa with his car and then fled the scene. As we should all have expected, Ji Woon takes the rap for his mother and claims he was the one who injected the poison (or "posion" if you're Laura) into Jung Hwa.

Min Soo has no choice but to slap the cuffs on the doctor and take him to jail. As she's leading him down the hallway, Dr. Oh No! appears and confesses that she is the real killer.

Dong Joo tells Soo Wan what has happened. In separate scenes they both cry their hearts out over Dr. Evil.

Ji Woon asks Dong Joo to come back to work at the hospital as Dr. Oh No! is away (in jail) and Ji Woon is also planning to go away somewhere.

After an emotional dream about her dead father, Soo Wan awakens to find her sight has been restored.

So naturally she walks out on Dong Joo.

An Open Letter To Self Published Authors

Dear Self Published Authors,

I'm writing this in hopes of sparing other, innocent people the pain and suffering I'm currently having to put up with.

Look, you have every right to crow about your achievement. You had the gumption (and the money) to pursue your dream, finish your project, and put it out there for the public to poke a stick at it. By all means give yourself a pat on the back.

But for the love of God, don't let "The Book" be all you can talk about morning, noon, and night. Don't be constantly badgering your friends/neighbors/co-workers/relatives with, "Have you bought the book yet?", "Have you read the book yet?", or "Have you posted a fake five star review of the book yet?" Don't create fake Facebook profiles so you can post ludicrous conversations with yourself about how great "The Book" is. Don't launch an all-out war over the internet against a complete stranger who didn't find "The Book" the greatest thing since sliced bread.

And finally, don't quit your day job.

                                                                      Yours truly,
                                                                          Someone who is sick to
                                                                             death of "The Book"

Angel Eyes Episode 17

Dong Joo is standing outside in the hospital hallway when he hears a crash coming from inside Dr. Evil's room. He rushes back inside and tries to help his old mentor who has fallen out of bed. Still unable to speak, Dr. Evil points insistently at a bedside cabinet. To calm the old man down, Dong Joo looks inside and finds the antique iPod Soo Wan left behind.

With the last of his strength, Dr. Evil mutters his daughter's name before dying. Dong Joo starts CPR while Ji Woon comes in with the crash cart. Despite all the shocks and half-ass compressions, it's too late for Dr. Evil. Soo Wan returns to the room just in time to hysterically cry, "Dad! Dad!" over and over. (As other viewers pointed out, Dr. Evil died not knowing he wasn't the real killer of Jung Hwa.)

The Three ER Prisoners are released just long enough for them to attend Dr. Evil's funeral service. They probably have to go right back to the hospital for another 16 hour shift or something. With Dr. Evil's death, Ji Woon feels the crush of guilt even more. He tells his mother, Dr. Oh No!, his intentions of confessing everything. She warns him if he tells anyone, she'll be implicated in Jung Hwa's death.

Back at his apartment, Dong Joo gets out the antique iPod to listen to it. Soo Wan has recorded a message confessing she didn't mean all those terrible things she said to Dong Joo. She still loves him and it hurts to send him away. Soo Wan had recorded it in the hospital room, not knowing her father could hear her.

Soo Wan is at her father's graveside, having flashback after flashback, when she faints. Luckily Dong Joo was watching her from afar and is able to rush her to the ER where our prisoners figure she just fainted from all the stress. When Soo Wan comes to, everything is dark and blurry for her. (C'mon, you knew there would be hysterical blindness down the road. This should come as no surprise.)

Since her blindness is caused by overwhelming guilt, Ji Woon (who knows all about overwhelming guilt) thinks if he tells her the truth then she'll regain her sight. On the other hand, that will also mean Dr. Oh No! will go to prison. Oh, the dilemma.

Dong Joo moves in to take care of Soo Wan. She tries to order him to leave but for once Dong Joo is adamant in refusing to go anywhere.

I'm skipping over the Teddy/Hye Joo/ Woon Chan love triangle.

Lawyers contact Dong Joo about Dr. Evil's last will and testament. Dong Joo learns he's come into some money. Also, Dr. Evil left him a letter, asking Dong Joo to keep taking care of Soo Wan.

Kim Woo Chul, finally released from the hospital, drops by for a visit with his old partner, Shifty Eyed Cop. Remember that scene where Woo Chul was up on the hospital roof and saw Shifty Eyed and Dr. Oh No! together? Well, he took a picture of them with his phone and is showing it off to Shifty Eyed Cop. Woo Chul is setting up a trap with himself as bait. He later tells Min Soo to be vigilant in case he needs her.

Min Soo is listening to old 119 tapes from twelve years ago in hopes of identifying who may have called in Jung Hwa's accident. Min Soo seems to recognize Ji Woon's voice although he never gives his name.

Soo Wan throws herself a Pity Party of epic proportions. It's bigger than a party; it's a Pity Grand Ball. It's the Mardi Gras of Pathetic Protagonists.

Angel Eyes Episode 16

Despite Dong Joo's protests, Soo Wan returns his ring. Cha Min Soo tries to talk some sense into her bestie while Dong Joo goes to cry on the unconscious shoulder of Dr. Evil. Dong Joo leaves the room just as the old man starts to open his eyes.

At the hospital, Kim Woo Chul is on the roof (naturally) trying to score a cigarette when down below he spies Dr. Oh No! and Shifty Eyed Cop having a meeting. Shifty Eyed has some bad news. The car that Dr. Oh No! thought had been scrapped 12 years ago is still around. The owner of the scrap yard decided back then to secretly repair it and keep the vehicle for himself.

Soo Wan comes to visit her now-awake father and finds both her ex-fiancés in the room. She goes running to her favorite park bench which is where Ji Woon finds her. He tells how he knows all about the sordid story and tries to convince Soo Wan to forgive her father. She just walks away.

Hye Joo has fallen ill so Teddy and Ki Woon Chan leave little Jin Mo home alone to fend for himself while they take her to the hospital. Thank goodness our Three ER Prisoners are there to help. But what is up with that dorky expression on Prisoner #2? At least I finally learn, in Episode 16, that Hye Joo's mystery illness was leukemia. Why the show couldn't mention that before, I don't know.

Dr. Evil may be awake but he's unable to speak or move.

Min Soo asks Ji Woon about a car his father bought and then had scrapped. She's planning to question his invisible father and thought she would give Ji Woon the heads up out of their friendship. Ji Woon asks where exactly Jung Hwa's accident happened. When Min Soo names the intersection, he again gets that nervous look on his face. He goes to the hospital records room and starts looking through the case files from 2002. Oddly, he's searching for the records of someone named Kim Hye Sook.

Dong Joo tells his sister about their mother's eyes. Hye Joo meets with her unni to assure Soo Wan how very glad she is about this and this is no reason for Dong Joo and Soo Wan to break up. Hye Joo has a Wise Moment and tells Soo Wan to stop with the weak excuses. Love will solve everything. Oh no, Soo Wan gives the whistle necklace to Hye Joo.

Ji Woon tracks down the mysterious Kim Hye Sook, an older woman. This leads to a flashback. Try not to laugh at a young Ji Woon. Try not to laugh. Alright, go ahead - laugh. At the hospital, young Ji Woon fidgets nervously as his mother inquires into a patient brought in earlier - the same Kim Hye Sook. She had been hit while riding her bicycle. As Dr. Oh No! visits with the patient, Ji Woon peers through the window and sees the woman in good health. He breathes a sigh of relief. (I can't speak for all American hospitals, but in the ones I've been in, the doors to the patients' rooms didn't have windows. It's called Privacy.)

Anyway, back to the Present. Ji Woon is asking Mrs. Kim about her bike accident. It was a hit and run, right? Mrs. Kim says no, she wasn't technically hit by a car; a passing vehicle frightened her so that she fell off her bike and broke her ankle. And that Dr. Oh No! was so nice, paying for Mrs. Kim's medical bills.

A dazed and confused Ji Woon drives away from the interview and into another flashback. This one shows it was bespectacled Ji Woon who was driving the fancy car that hit Jung Hwa. Back at his apartment, Ji Woon calls his mother over to ask the hard questions about what the heck was going on with the Kim Hye Sook deception.

Soo Wan and Dong Joo have another fight. Dong Joo has another brooding shower scene. He gathers together the letters he had written to Soo Wan and their antique iPod and gives them to Min Soo to give to her friend. Soo Wan listens to the tearful message Dong Joo left on the player. Dong Joo has his bags packed and his plane tickets to Boston in hand. But first he has to pay one more visit to bedridden Dr. Evil. After another boo hoo session, Dong Joo starts to leave the hospital room. Dr. Evil summons the last of his strength to reach up and take off his oxygen mask.

I'm no doctor, but I don't think removing an oxygen mask is going to put a patient in deadly danger. But this is DramaLand, where the laws of space and time and common sense aren't considered.

Angel Eyes Episode 15

Soo Wan is taking the Walk of Too Much Crap To Deal With as she thinks back to what she overheard between Dong Joo and her dad.

Dr. Evil returns home to write a letter to his daughter. (Suicide note? Confession? Grocery list?) Soo Wan stumbles home, acting half out of her mind, and confronts her father about killing Jung Hwa. Dr. Evil expresses his guilt but Soo Wan's having none of that. She screeches that even if Dong Joo and Hye Joo find it in their hearts to forgive him, she never will. Soo Wan storms out of the house. Dr. Evil grabs his chest and collapses.

Worried that Soo Wan might know something, Dong Joo goes racing over to her house. He finds the front door open and goes inside to find her unconscious father. Dong Joo piggybacks Dr. Evil to the ER because why call an ambulance in a show about ambulance drivers?

As always, our Three Prisoners of the ER are on duty. Dr. Evil requires immediate heart surgery but there's no heart surgeon who can get to the hospital in time. This looks like a job for Park Dong Joo. He dons his surgical Crocs and goes in. As usual with up close and personal surgery scenes, I look away.

Skipping over the OR drama, I now go straight to the recovery room. I feel for actor Jung Jin Young who has to lie there with that thing in his mouth and tape on his face. Ji Woon puts his jealousy aside long enough to congratulate Dong Joo on his excellent surgical skills. With Dr. Evil unconscious and recovering, Dong Joo now turns to tracking Soo Wan down.

Cha Min Soo can't find the eye witness from the last episode. Kim Woo Chul figures the guy has been bought off. There's only one family in town powerful enough to be able to boss the Chief of Police around, make evidence disappear, and bribe people into silence: The Kang Family.

Min Soo (very clumsily, if you ask me) asks Ji Woon about his dad, Prosecutor Kang Im Tae. From the way Ji Woon talks, Dad is a control freak. Everything must go according to plan. Ji Woon's mother, Dr. Oh No!, still had him even though there was a 70% chance of her dying from giving birth. Hmm, I feel there's a reason for Ji Woon to be mentioning this.

Dong Joo still can't find his girlfriend.

Min Soo goes to the scrap yard to ask about an expensive car that was junked twelve years ago. She can't help but to notice the guy she talks to at the yard acts mighty suspicious as he claims he doesn't know anything.

Soo Wan finally shows up at the fire station but only to turn in her resignation. She learns from her boss about Dr. Evil's health crisis. At the hospital, Dong Joo and Ji Woon are worrying over Dr. Evil and whether he'll fully recover or not. Dong Joo muses about his mother's hit-and-run. This seems to spark a memory in Ji Woon, who didn't know this part of the story. What do you know, Ji Woon?

Soo Wan finally shows up at the hospital. Dong Joo tells her about the emergency surgery they had to perform. He warns her that Dr. Evil isn't out of the woods just yet. There's still the chance her father may never fully recover. Soo Wan tells Dong Joo she knows all about the sordid mess her father made. Dong Joo insists he still wants to marry her but Soo Wan returns his ring.

Angel Eyes Episode 14

Soo Wan lets Dong Joo know she knows she has Jung Hwa's eyes. Then Soo Wan gets hysterical and cries her/Jung Hwa's eyes out. Dong Joo gently chides that Jung Hwa didn't donate her eyes just so Soo Wan could shed tears all the time.

Dr. Evil starts to wonder why Dong Joo is so gung ho to get him and Soo Wan to America. Could it be Dong Joo knows the truth about Dr. Evil's part in Jung Hwa's death? Doc goes to confront blackmailer Choi Jin Sang. Jin Sang smirks as he doesn't deny telling Dong Joo the truth (as he knows it). The blackmailers brings up the possibility of talking to Soo Wan, which leads to another collar-grabbing moment. (I still think this guy is going to end up dead.)

Ji Woon takes the Three ER Prisoners out for a walk in the sun. They haven't seen the outdoors in so long! Anyway, Ji Woon finds out that Soo Wan has found out about her eye donor.

Soo Wan comes home to find her father collapsed on the floor. She completely forgets she's an EMT and simply keeps yelling, "Dad! Dad!" as she shakes him. Somehow she gets Dr. Evil up to his bedroom (I still want to know how teeny tiny Soo Wan moves these big heavy men around by herself.) and calls Dong Joo to come over. Dr. Evil refuses treatment because he doesn't want his daughter to know how sick he really is. Not that Dong Joo was all that thrilled at the thought of treating his mother's murderer.

After her father's close call, Soo Wan more than ever wants to put off moving to Boston.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Suicidal Jumper drops by the station house to deliver some baked goods and announce he's had a change of heart about killing himself.

Ji Woon and Dong Joo get together to listen to some Barry Manilow. Ji Woon discloses that he now knows Soo Wan has Jung Hwa's eyes. He once again tries to guilt-trip Dong Joo into breaking up with Soo Wan. More collar-grabbing.

Teddy fears Hye Joo has the hots for Ki Woon Chan.

Cha Min Soo gets a response to her sign asking for witnesses to Jung Hwa's accident. The guy complains about how little the reward money is this time. He got a lot more from the police back twelve years ago. Hush money! Min Soo's spidey senses are tingling like crazy. A flashback shows us it was Shifty Eyed Cop, pretending to be Kim Woo Chul, who paid the guy off.

Dong Joo returns to his apartment building to find Dr. Evil waiting outside. The guilt-ridden older man drops to his knees and tries to beg for forgiveness for what he thinks he's done. An angry Dong Joo refuses to give any mercy.

The DramaBush Watches Over Them
And of course Soo Wan is just around the corner hearing all this.
