Queen of Ambition Episode 1

Also known as Yawang. Also known as Night King. Also known as Wild King. Whatever you want to call it, you can see them all over at Viki.

Prosecutor Ha Ryu (played by Kwon Sang Woo) is being driven in a little car with a siren. The press are following closely, perhaps dangerously close, as they try to predict where the "Independent Council" is going. (I'm assuming that means Ha Ryu is the Independent Council.) They're surprised to see Ha Ryu is heading for the Blue House (Korea's White House) to perform a search and seizure.

Interspersed with this are scenes (that irrationally and irritatingly flip upside down sometimes) of First Lady Joo Dae Hae (played by Soo Ae) and her posse entering a crowded room. (I'm not really a big fan of Soo Ae. She always seems to have the same expression on her face no matter what's going on.) She's greeted with applause and camera flashes as she makes her way to the stage to host a children's orchestra.

Meanwhile a reporter helps fill us in on what the big deal is. The Independent Council is investigating Dae Hae for bribery. Ha Ryu arrives at the Blue House with his own posse and those ever-lovin' blue boxes. He wants to talk the First Lady personally but she refuses to leave in the middle of the concert. So the mountain goes to Muhammad and Ha Ryu crashes the concert. Kinda rude, Ryu. Why spoil this moment for the kids? You could have waited.

She takes Ryu to her private rooms because he wants to get into her... safe. What did you think he wanted to get into? Pervert. Dae Hae politely warns him she'll have her revenge some day. He softly wonders if the country's First Lady is also a murderer. Dae Hae looks... like she always looks, because she's Soo Ae. She opens the safe, not seeing Ryu starting to tear up at the thought of her being a killer. She whips out a pistol from the safe and aims it at Ryu. He doesn't back down, telling her she doesn't belong here in the Blue House and to go back to where she came from.

Out in the hallway, the Secret Service hear a gun shot. They can't open the door because she locked it. An agent starts shooting at the door lock. That's some secure door as it takes several shots to get anywhere. Inside the room, Dae Hae leans up against Ryu as blood drops on the floor between them. Ryu wonders to himself how they both ended up this way.

And we won't see the outcome of this scene for another 23 episodes.

Time travel back twelve years before this. Ha Ryu has traveled to Seoul and met up with his bud, Yang Taek Bae (played by Kwan Hyun Sang, the bad vampire from Vampire Prosecutor 2.) Ryu has come to help Taek Bae get back some money from a vicious girl that has Taek Bae shaking in his boots. (The girl better not be Soo Ae. There's absolutely no way she could make anyone shake in their boots.)

Ryu takes the initiative and bursts into the house of said vicious girl. Instead he finds the body of a dead woman covered with a sheet. Dae Hae is kneeling nearby but she just keels right over in a faint. Ryu has her taken to the hospital. As he rides with her in the ambulance, Ryu thinks back to the last time he saw Dae Hae.

Stay with me now. We're time traveling back seven years before the twelve years before the first scene of the show.

Ryu is now being played by Crybaby Chunchu from The King's Dream. Boy, you better not cry. Anyway, he's being separated from Child Dae Hae because she's being reunited with her birth mother. Dae Hae gives him a white die to remember her by. Ryu in turn... shoves her to the ground! What the hell, Chunchu?!? Dae Hae simply gets back up and wishes him well. Ah, spoke too soon. Ryu runs off and has a cry.

Okay, we're back to the present. Well, no, we're not. It's still the past, just not the past past. Dae Hae's mother died three days ago. Dae Hae hadn't eaten or drunk anything in that time is why she fainted. She worries about not having the money to pay for the hospital or a funeral. Ryu comes to her rescue and takes out all his savings to pay the bills.

At the mother's funeral, Dae Hae flashes back to when she was a little girl (but before she was the little girl Chunchu shoved to the ground) when her parents tried to kill themselves by car fumes. Mom managed to survive but Dad took Route 666.

I don't know about you but I'm exhausted from all this time traveling.

After the cremation, Dae Hae and Mom's Ashes are returning home when she's met by a rather handsome man who may be her step brother. He warns her that Mom's second husband has been nosing around the house. Dae Hae expresses her desire to kill her stepdad. Once the coast is clear she hurriedly packs her bags and disappears into the night.

Nevermind that, what's the cute guy's name?

Ryu comes to deliver some food, only to find Dae Hae gone without a trace. As he starts to leave he sees and is seen by Stepdad, but does he recognize the man? I'm not sure. But Stepdad notes the truck Ryu is driving which is plastered with the name of the ranch Ryu works at.

Dae Hae calls in a favor from an old friend from school to get a job tutoring the friend's younger sister. The mother is not thrilled to have Dae Hae in the house so the job doesn't last very long. As she leaves, Dae Hae steals the mother's diamond ring, later throwing it into someone's garbage can.

Next, Dae Hae goes to try and get a job at a bar, which in Korean culture seems to be a terrible shame for a woman. I guess a bar girl is just one step away from a prostitute. However, Taek Bae sees her and immediately calls Ryu who comes running to stop her.

Dae Hae explains she can't go back home because of Stepdad, who did the Bad Touch back when she was a kid. Ryu invites her to come live with him at the ranch. A montage shows how Dae Hae studies hard to get into college while Ryu studies how to make horse shoes. (How do you go from horse shoes to public prosecutor?)

Ryu agonizes over how to come up with the money for Dae Hae's tuition. Taek Bae talks his friend into becoming the male version of what he wouldn't allow Dae Hae to become at the bar. I cry double standard!

One day Ryu is driving to go pick up some food when he passes a man walking along the side of the road. It takes forever but finally Ryu realizes the man was Stepdad. Knowing that Dae Hae is all alone at the ranch, Ryu races back. Dae Hae is indeed being chased by Stepdad. She runs into the stable to try and hide. By the time Ryu gets back and tracks the pair down in the stable, Dae Hae has already grabbed a sharp tool (I'm not sure what it is) and stabbed Stepdad in the heart.
