My Daughter Seo Young Episode 1

It opens at a large swimming pool. Over to the side is some kind of couples contest. Look, a tan Korean! An actual Korean with a tan! Sorry, I just got so excited by this rare sighting. Anyway, the couples are competing for a vacation trip. The winning girl is Lee Seo Young (played by Lee Bo Young). She's hugging on her guy when another girl steps out of the crowd and claims the guy as her boyfriend. Seo Young just shrugs and basically says, "He's not your boyfriend anymore." This leads to a cat fight by the poolside.

The next scene is as clear as mud. Seo Young is sitting in a van, drying off. Some people are apologizing for things getting out of hand at the pool. They also mention dialogue and stuff and now I'm totally confused. Was all this being filmed? Is this some kind of hidden camera show or something? Whatever it is, it's a part time gig Seo Young does to help pay for her law classes and such.

We get a brief scene of Kang Woo Jae (played by Lee Sang Yoon) saying goodbye to his platoon as he's being discharged from the army today.

Back to Seo Young. She gets a call from her mother who lives back on Jeju Island. Mom wants to send her money for Seo Young's tuition. Curious, Seo Young asks where the money came from. Hesitantly Mom replies how Dad helped out. Seo Young is skeptical. Dad never helps out.

The next scene shows us why. Dad Lee Sam Jae (played by Chun Ho Jin) likes to gamble. He actually wins a nice bundle at the track that day, but by that night he's lost it all as well as the tuition money.

Woo Jae returns to his home. Mom squeals with delight, bursting my ear drums. Dad Kang Ki Beom (played by Choi Jung Woo) doesn't give a damn that his son is back. He's still mad because Woo Jae doesn't want to work at the family business, whatever it is. Woo Jae's sister, Kang Mi Gyung (played by Park Jung Ah), takes a break from her medical studies to welcome her older brother home. Baby brother Kang Sung Jae (played by Lee Jung Shin) is mighty skinny and mighty fae. He's just run off yet another tutor. Remember that, it'll come up later.

Woo Jae gets his motorcycle out of storage and cranks up the Guns N Roses. Hell ya! I notice he's wearing his "arley avidso" gear. Way to avoid trademark infringement, producers. Anyway, Woo Jae is stopped at a red light when he sees Seo Young. She's dressed up in slutty clothes and a wig and doing her stunt for whatever it is she's doing. She's asking a man if he'll loan her some money while batting her eyelashes and showing off her cleavage. (Seriously, what the hell kind of show is this she's filming?) Woo Jae just shakes his head at the spectacle. The light turns green and as he's driving off his eagle eyes (not on the road where they should be) notices she's got a blister on the back of her right heel from the slutty shoes she's wearing.

With the filming over, Seo Young is back at the van putting a band aid on her heel. She gets a message on her phone from her twin brother, Lee Sang Woo (played by Park Hae Jin). She'd better get to Jeju right away. Mom has had a heart attack.

Seo Young tries to flag down a taxi but she hasn't had time to change out of her slutty costume so they're giving her a wide berth. Meanwhile, Woo Jae has parked his motorcycle and is waiting to meet up with a friend who is just now driving up in his teeny tiny car. When he's not looking, a desperate Seo Young jumps on his bike and takes off. Woo Jae jumps into his friend's car and they try to give chase. Again, Woo Jae has some remarkable vision as he's able to see the place on the back of the woman's heel and remembers it's the slut he saw earlier. The boys are unable to keep up with the stolen bike so they go to the police station to make a report.

Seo Young gets to the airport, changes into not-slutty clothes and catches the first flight to the island. Sadly there's nothing she can do as Mom doesn't make it through the surgery. Seo Young blames her mother's heart condition on her father, Sam Jae.

The day of the funeral, all the people Sam Jae owes money to come to demand their pound of flesh. Seo Young swears she won't help him and flies back to - uh, wherever she's going to college. I'm assuming it is Seoul but you never know. Anyway, she takes her mother's ashes with her and goes back to her one room apartment. However, despite what she said earlier, Seo Young does break down and wire some money to her brother to keep the debtors quiet for now.

Kang Ki Beom belittles his wife before leaving for work. Oh how I hate you already. We follow him to wherever he works and encounter the invisible Choi Min Seok (played by Hong Yo Seob) For some ungodly reason we have to get to know all about Min Seok's annoying family and how mom wants daughter Choi Ho Jung to marry well, because heaven forbid a woman make her own way in the world today.

With no place to live now, Sam Jae and Sang Woo move in with Seo Young.

With no tuition money, Seo Young may have to drop out of school for awhile. Anonymous Classmate (I didn't catch his name) tries to talk her out of it. She's only got one more semester to go. He even offers to pay for it, but she's too proud. So instead he clues her in on a possible tutoring job for - you guessed it, Kang Sung Jae.

Seo Young dresses up in her one nice dress and is walking along the streets looking for the address of the tutoring job. It had rained earlier in the day so there are mud puddles along the street. Woo Jae is driving down the road when he splashes dirty water all over her. Seo Young gives chase and makes him stop. Woo Jae offers her money to get the stained dress cleaned. Proud Seo Young won't accept it. She just wanted an apology. He gives her a half-hearted one and she starts to walk off. He chases after her to make her take the money. She chases after him and forces him to take the money back. The two glare at each other, which in DramaLand means love.
