A Hundred Year's Inheritance Episode 1

You can watch A Hundred Year's Inheritance over at Viki.

Min Chae Won (played by Eugene, which in my world is a boy's name but whatever...) is getting her makeup done and is looking over prom dress rejects. Please don't wear what you've picked out. Please don't wear what you've picked out. Please don't - aw heck, she's gonna wear it. She's attending a fancy dinner in honor of of her mother-in-law, president of Keumyoung Food.

MIL Bang Young Ja (played by Park Won Suk) presents herself as a humble businesswoman who worked hard to forge her food empire. She thanks her son Kim Chul Goo (played by Choi Won Young) and her daughter Kim Joo Ri (played by Yoon Ah Jung) for all their love and support. But when the spotlight moves over to Chae Won, MIL decides to just skip over her. Later, as the dinner is winding down, MIL takes time out to run all over poor Chae Won about her poor background and fashion sense. Like MIL has room to talk. What is up with your hair and outfit, old lady?

(I'd like to take a moment to point out that in the Real World not every mother-in-law is a witch like this. Special shout out to my late Aunt M. who was adored by her daughters-in-law.)

As Chae Won starts to remove her pink explosion of a dress, we see a bandage on her neck. Anyway, she changes clothes and makes a late night trip to see her family. Grandfather Uhm Pyung Dal (played by Shin Goo.) is busy making oodles of noodles. I will say this part is slightly interesting as I've never before seen how noodles are made, although the hanging them up outside in the open seems a bit unsanitary.

Her father is Min Hyo Dong (played by Jung Bo Suk.) He can tell something is wrong with his little girl although she pretends everything is fine. Everyone goes inside for something to eat and to infodump on the audience. Grandpa is upset because his grown kids won't help with making the oodles of noodles, the family business for generations, and money is tight. Dad Hyo Dong works on the poles. (Not sure if this is telephone or electricity or even exotic dancing.) Mom is dead.

Evil MIL decides to get back at Chae Won by planting a lipstick mark on husband Chul Goo's shirt. Thank goodness Chae Won is smart enough to notice her MIL's lipstick is the same shade as what is on the shirt. When Chae Won dares to laugh at her (like we're all doing) MIL has a major hair-pulling hissy fit. The one good thing to come out of this is Chae Won finally asks her useless husband for a divorce.

More shots of noodles. Now I want noodles.

On a plane we meet Lee Se Yoon (played by Lee Jung Jin) who is returning to Korea from America. And then we're gone. That wasn't much of an introduction, Show.

Next up are two ladies praying at the temple. One woman is Baek Sul Joo (played by Cha Hwa Yun) and she's going to bow to Buddha 3,000 times in honor of Se Yoon's birthday. The other woman is the wife of Director Uhm Ki Moon (played by Kim Myung Soo) who is the uncle of Chae Won.

Chae Won remembers back to her wedding day. Even then future MIL had a bad haircut and an even worse attitude. The woman is just too hung up on her son. She's starting to border on creepy hung up on her son. As Chae Won's flashback marriage continues, MIL just gets worse and worse. I think MIL needs some major medication. Oh, get this: MIL shows Chae Won some pictures of pretty women. When Chae Won asks who they are, MIL explains she's trying to choose her next daughter-in-law, as she doesn't expect his current marriage to last much longer. And we see how useless hubby Chul Goo caused that wound to Chae Won's neck.

Wait until they're all asleep, Chae Won, then burn the house down!

Back to the present. Chae Won goes to see Evil MIL (or EMIL) to announce she's going to divorce her husband. EMIL starts to say that instead of getting any money from the family, it is Chae Won who should be paying alimony to Chul Goo. Chae Won is prepared, though. She's got all her medical records documenting her physical abuse over the years, as well as evidence of Chul Goo's affairs during their marriage.

Chae Won goes to tell her father about what's going on but before she can get into it they're joined by Uhm Ki Ok, her aunt. Auntie just talks and talks and talks. Shut up already, woman!

We cut to a scene outside of a store where Gang Jin (played by Park Young Kyu) is singing. On the floor above the store, Ki Ok is trying to teach piano lessons to a little girl but neither can concentrate with that noise going on outside. Ki Ok goes outside to complain but Gang Jin just keeps on singing, forcing Ki Ok to cut the cord to his microphone.

Meanwhile, the plane has finally landed. Man, that was one long flight! Se Yoon has gotten his carry-on bag mixed up with another passenger's. He's greeted by his jubilant mother who clearly doesn't believe in saying no to fur. They return home where Se Yoon's dad attempts (and fails) to sing Happy Birthday to his son. Blowing out his candles causes Se Yoon to have a flashback. He's been involved in a car accident. In the passenger seat is a bloody woman. Se Yoon keeps yelling the name "Youngsun" while the EMT's do nothing helpful.

At a hotel room we join the passenger, Yang Choon Hee, who has gotten Se Yoon's bag. She also doesn't believe in saying no to fur. She's on her phone with a real estate agent discussing a place to open a cafe. She opens the bag and discovers there's been a mix up. Looks like she's got the best end of the deal, though. There's an iPad in there! And unlike her knockoff, this bag is the real deal.

We're back to Gang Jin singing inside a nice restaurant. He recognizes Ki Ok who is here on a blind date. After his singing gig is done, Jin takes his revenge by ruining her date and scaring the guy off.

Lastly, we're introduced to Uhm Ki Choon (played by Kwon Oh Joong.) He's sneaking around in the restaurant where his wife (whom he's separated from) works and attempts to make off with some money. She catches him and hits him upside the head with a ham hock.

Finally we get back to Chae Won. She's packing her bags and starting to leave the House of Hell when EMIL drives up and jumps out of the car. She's near hysterics as she tells Chae Won that Chul Goo has been in a terrible accident. Chae Won, suddenly made stupid by the writer(s), gets in the car with EMIL to go to the distant hospital where her husband supposedly is. While Chae Won isn't looking, EMIL quietly takes her cell phone out of her purse.

When they stop at the hospital, Chae Won goes dashing in, never noticing the sign saying it is a MENTAL hospital. She follows two orderlies, thinking they're taking her to her husband. It's not until after she finds herself locked in the room (with bars on the windows!) that Chae Won begins to realize she's been tricked.

You can't swing a cat without hitting a veteran actor in this drama. I'm hoping it was the script and not just the paycheck that attracted all this talent to the project. Not much really happened in this episode as we were given an introduction to the immense cast. It wasn't until the very end when the story went totally makjang that there was an event. I may have to check out the next episode to see where this goes.

Or I may not.
