Haeundae Lovers Episode 1

A truck sits alongside a boating dock. Inside of the back of the truck are three men monitoring various video screens and complaining about the stench of their farts. They've been on stakeout for three days waiting for the leader of the drug cartel, Oh Jung Chul, to show up. And what luck, here he comes now! He and his entourage board a boat where other staple bad guys are waiting. They exchange a briefcase of money for some powdered goods cause that's how you do a drug deal: in broad daylight, out in the open for everyone to see.

Prosecutor Lee Tae Sung (played by Kim Kang Woo) thinks they've finally got their man. But wait! On screen they see one of their undercover police comrades being captured by the bad guys. Their cover is blown! Prosecutor Lee dashes out of the truck to confront the baddies all by himself. (No, don't ask why a prosecutor would be personally involved in a stakeout, let alone going out to face at least twenty villains all by himself, unarmed, while the other two policemen who are armed stay in the truck. Just accept it and move on.) Lee wraps his cellphone in his vest and slings it around as a weapon. (Seriously, have you seen how big those kdrama cell phones have gotten lately? I bet they would hurt.) He's laying the bad guys flat left and right. The head rat, Oh Jung Chul, jumps on a small speedboat and thinks he's about to get away when Tae Sung jumps from the big boat onto the deck of the small boat. More hand to hand combat ensues with Tae Sung being knocked into the water.

Again Oh Jung Chul thinks he's about to get away. He makes it to shore and jumps into a car. But don't count out Lee "Michael Phelps" Tae Sung just yet. He swims to shore at almost the same time as the speedboat docks. Without even gasping for breath he runs after Oh's car, which luckily gets stuck in a traffic jam. Oh Jung Chul exits the car and makes for the beach crowded with pasty white Koreans. Not a tan to be found. Tae Sung continues the pursuit. A desperate rat does a smart thing. Oh Jung Chul takes the money out of the briefcase he's carrying and throws the moola up into the air. Dozens of pasty white Koreans scrabble for the money, blocking Tae Sung's way and allowing Oh Jung Chul to once again escape justice.

Tae Sung is furious at Officer Jang for getting caught and ruining their stakeout. Lucky for Jang that Tae Sung doesn't have time to phone-whip him. He's got to get back up to Seoul to get married.

The next scene shows the heroine, Go So Ra, and her household of tattooed men, including her mentally disabled father. He wasn't always this way and I guess if you keep watching you'll find out what happened to him. They (as in the mentally stable members of the household) are all working towards buying their own fish shop, although the original dream was to have hotel. She's looking for some woman named Gwan Soon, who may be her sister and runs up credit card bills, and I think she's supposed to be marrying some guy named Min Gu. (Honestly this is where I started to lose interest, but Gaksital isn't fully subbed yet, so I'll keep watching.)

Back to the other story. We see a beautiful and patient bride waiting for Prosecutor Lee. This is Lee Se Na (played by Nam Gyu Ri - the dead chick from 49 Days. I liked 49 Days. I'd rather be watching 49 Days than this dud.) Tae Sung comes running in at the last second. He hurriedly gets changed, giving us a glimpse of his six pack abs. (Honey, you're gonna have to show more than that to rescue this show.) Father is there to worry about his son being hurt by gangsters and heaping praises on him for being such a fine upstanding citizen and son. Dad leaves and then Mom, or should I say Step-Mom, comes in and slaps Tae Sung because her plastic surgeon injected too much silicone into her puffy lips. No, she's slapping him because she doesn't like how he's getting all the glory over her sons. You know, same old same old. (Has there ever been a kdrama where the stepmother and stepson got along? I'd like to know.)

Go So Ra is driving her fish delivery truck and is stopped at a red light. An elderly woman is walking in front of her (it's the Grandma from Protect the Boss. I liked Protect the Boss. I'd rather be watching Protect the Boss than this fail.) when a scooter almost runs over Grandma. So Ra rushes out to check on Grandma and offers to give her a lift. Turns out the old woman wants to go to the Haeundae Hotel, the hotel So Ra and her Four Dwarfs wanted to own.

This marks the halfway point of the show and this is as far as I'm going.
