Lights And Shadows Episode 1

I have so many books to read, so this peek is going to be short.

We open with an early version of a karaoke bar. There's a guy wearing PLAID PANTS!! and singing a song whose lyrics are mainly "Ahhhhhhhh." After the song is done, Plaid Pants takes all his gisaeng girls along to see a movie (they're the only ones in the theater.

Cut to a couple of killjoys riding around dark and deserted streets. They see the lights at the theater are on after curfew, so they stop to investigate. Plaid Pants' dad, The Old Man Who Is In Absolutely Everything (not to be confused with The Other Old Man Who Is In Absolutely Everything), puts a stop to the fun times.

Next we see an affluent woman sending her daughter, Myeong Hui, a package of instant coffee and OMG, is that Tang?!? Do they even make Tang anymore? Anyway, the daughter is off in Seoul attending college. And drinking Tang! Next time I'm in the grocery store I'll have to look and see if Tang is still on the shelves.

Old Man, who is owner of the theater, goes through the books and finds his son (he has a name, Gi Tae, but since he's still wearing those gawd-awful pants, I'm still going to call him Plaid Pants) has been skimming off the top. Plaid Pants tries to defend his taking the money. He's invested it in a new action movie that may or may not be done filming by now. Old Man is not impressed.

Dad leaves for a meeting with Senator Jang Cheol Hwan (played by Jun Kwang Ryul of Sign and King of Baking). Jang wants some donations to his political war chest. Old Man is not impressed.

Plaid Pants -er, now it is a plaid jacket - and his best bud head off to Seoul for some clubbing fun. Is that Disco Inferno playing? Now its Boogie Wonderland. As he's jiving on the crowded dance floor, Plaid Pants bumps into Tang Girl, who happens to be his sister. He threatens to tell mom about her. She threatens to tell dad about him. Stalemate at the Disco!

The next day Plaid and pal go to check up on their investment only to find (ooh, big surprise. not.) they've been scammed.

Back home, Cha Soo Hyuk has returned from Vietnam. (But Boogie Wonderland came out years after the Vietnam War.) Soo Hyuk is the son of the housekeeper at the Old Man's house, yet she strangely doesn't seem that excited to see her returning offspring. Old Man shows more pleasure at Soo Hyuk's arrival.

Senator Jang - channeling his inner Jo Pilyeon - is out target practicing when he's joined by Soo Hyuk. It was thanks to Jang that Soo Hyuk got a safe and cushy assignment during the war. Now the Senator expects Soo Hyuk to come work for him.

Plaid and pal go in search of the man who scammed them. They bust onto a movie set where the director who was supposed to be doing their film is working. He gives the best line of the show so far: "Camera roarl" (camera roll). Plaid demands to know where Yang Tae Seong (the head scammer) is. Security tries to step in but Pal turns out to be more nimble and dangerous than his spare tire lets on.

The director claims he was scammed as well. He calls over an actress who was performing in the interrupted scene. She got the part because of Yang Tae Seong but she claims she doesn't know where he is at the moment. Plaid Pants doesn't believe her and starts to drag her off to the police station. She fights back and refuses to go.

Now they're playing Dance of the Hours, better known as Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah.

After work, Plaid and Pal follow the actress who does indeed lead them to that damned elusive Pimpernel Yang Tae Seong, who is gambling his/their money away. Cue action scene! Plaid has some moves, and not just the Hustle. Yang Tae Seong has neither money or a movie to give to Plaid Pants, which means there's no entertainment at the theater for the upcoming mid-Autumn festival.

Plaid and Pal go to a tea house to see about hiring a performing troupe. Also there, auditioning (badly), is the same actress from the movie set, Lee Jeong Hye. And that's where it ends.
